Buffalo County Fair Food Stand and Snack Shack - 4-H members are asked to do their part to support our 4-H program by working at least one shift at the 4-H food stand and snack shack during the Buffalo County Fair July 30 to August 5. Call the Extension office at 236-1235 to sign up. The sooner you sign up the better choice you have for your shift preference. Each 4-H family is asked to bring two fruit pies to the food stand. Bring your pies during the shift you are working. Tomatoes and onions will also be welcome

Assistant Superintendents and Junior Superintendents needed for Buffalo County Fair in almost all areas. If you might be interested, call the Extension office for details. Junior Superintends must be at least 12 years of age, willing to assist the superintendent of a project area with fair planning, cleanup day, and during County Fair.

County Fair and State Fair Volunteers - If you are interested in volunteering at the State Fair there is need for volunteers during entry time, judging, and release of exhibits. The Volunteer Interest form can be downloaded from the Web at http://4h.unl.edu/volunteers/sfvolunteers.htm Or call the Extension office. We will also need help for exhibit entry and release at the Buffalo County Fair.

4-H Information Booth/Static Exhibit Supervision Sign-up - Don’t forget to sign up to supervise the exhibit building during the County fair. This year we also use this opportunity to promote Buffalo County 4-H and provide information about our awesome organization. Two people are needed for each two-hour time slot. On Thursday, July 31, the two-hour shifts beginning at 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, August 1 and 2, the two-hour shifts begin at 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. On Sunday, August 3, the two-hour shifts start at 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Monday, August 4, the two-hour shifts are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you need to split a shift, let us know. Please try to fit a shift into your schedule to help us to protect our exhibits and promote 4-H.

Buffalo County Fair Pre-Entries - The pre-entry forms have been mailed to all Buffalo County 4-H’ers. These forms need to be completed and returned to the Extension office by July 7. These pre-entry form are for all small animal, horse, livestock and static exhibits. The Fair Premium Books have been distributed in the Kearney Hub on Tuesday, June 3. Refer to this publication for entry rules and division/class numbers. The Extension office has extra premium books if you do not subscribe to the Kearney Hub.

Buffalo County 4-H T-Shirt - Buffalo County Farm Bureau has been kind enough to again provide each Buffalo County 4-H member, excluding Clover Kids, a free official Buffalo County 4-H t-shirt. Extra t-shirts will be available for purchase for $7.00. Those 4-H’ers exhibiting livestock, dogs, and small animals at the fair will be expected to comply with the following dress code. DRESS CODE: Exhibitors showing beef, dairy, dogs, cats, pets, meat goats, sheep, swine, poultry, and rabbits are required to wear the official Buffalo County 4-H T-shirt. Dark blue jeans are required for beef, dog, cat, sheep, swine, poultry, and rabbit exhibitors. Dairy and dairy goat exhibitors may wear dark blue jeans or white pants. Long jeans/pants are required for cat exhibitors. No hat, caps or other type of headgear are to be worn in the show ring. Exhibitors shall not display local club, commercial or other identification while showing their animals – except official 4-H and such identification the show ring may require. In addition, beef, sheep, goat, dairy and swine exhibitors are required to wear hard soled shoes or boots, and a belt. (See horse division for horse member dress code.)

4-H Food and Fitness Camp - This is a camp for 8-10 year olds (or beginning foods members) that want to learn more about basic kitchen skills and basic fitness. The camp will take place on June 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. There is a $15 fee per participant. Please call the Extension Office to sign your child up for the camp or if you or an older 4-H member would like to volunteer to help with the camp.

4-H Culinary Camp - This camp is for 11 and older 4-H’ers that want to learn advanced kitchen skills, menu planning, table presentation, theme meals and etiquette. The camp will conclude with a dinner prepared by the participants for their guests (2 per participant). This camp will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday and 1 p.m. with the formal dinner at 6 p.m. on Thursday. The fee for this camp is $35 per participant.

NACEB Scholarships - Attention Buffalo County 4-H’ers who have just graduated and are planning to attend CASNR or CEHS The Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards (NACEB) is proud to announce that they will be providing two scholarships for College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) and/or College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) students - $1000 for incoming or transfer students and $500 for a current student. The application is available at the Buffalo County Extension office.

Food Fare - Set the table with creativity and nutrition knowledge ... Plan a menu and table setting for the 2008 Food Fare contest. The Food Fare will be held on July 8, at 8:00 a.m. at the Buffalo County Extension Center. 4-H’ers are asked to plan a menu suitable for an indoor or outdoor meal, prepare one food item for the menu and bring it along with selected table service, two recipe cards and menus, and your own card table/eating area. If you are interested in being involved in this project, there are full details in the Premium Book. You must be enrolled in the Food Fare Project to participate in the Food Fare Contest. Registration deadline is July 1. Call the Extension office to register. A $10 late fee will be charged for registrations received after July 1.

4-H Presentations - July 8 at 6:30 p.m. The County contest will be held on July 8 at 6:30 p.m. with registration by July 1. Members may only present in either class 151109 OR 151110 but can also present in class 151114. There are three classes for individuals or teams: Class 151109 - Presentation using LCD, video or overhead. Class 151110 - Presentation using posters. Class 151114 - Multimedia presentation. The class Multimedia Presentation is a fully automated presentation 6 to 10 minutes in length using power point and can include video and sound.. This presentation is completely free standing and only requires an introduction by the participant. The primary aim of this presentation will be to present information clearly and interestingly while making use of an original presentation created on a computer. Each county can nominate one 4-H’er to participate in the Premier Presenter Contest at the Nebraska State Fair. This is a special contest for the best of the best. A $10 late fee will be charged for registrations received after July. No registrations will be accepted after July 3.

Fashion Revue - The 4-H Fashion Revue is an opportunity for 4-H’ers to model clothing items that they have constructed themselves. They will learn about selection, fit, appearance, and poise. The 4-H Fashion Revue will be held on July 17 at the Buffalo County Extension Center. Pre-registration forms are due to the Extension office by July 9. Registrations received after Friday, July 9 will be charged a $10 late fee. No entries will be accepted after July 14. All 4-H’ers who are modeling their articles of clothing need to check in the day of the revue between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Judging will begin at 3 p.m. at the Buffalo County Extension Building. The public show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Buffalo County Extension Center. All 4-H’ers must be ready by 7:00 p.m. All 4-H’ers must participate in the public show in order to receive a ribbon. If you have any questions, please contact the Extension office.

DNA Identification Required On all Market Lambs, Hogs, Meat Goats and Feeder Calves for 2008 Ak-Sar-Ben Youth Show. The 2008 State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben 4-H shows require DNA hair samples in addition to being identified on a state ID sheet to be eligible to show. State Fair requires DNA for market lambs, market hogs and meat goats. Ak-Sar-Ben requires DNA for market lambs, hogs, meat goats and feeder calves. (NEW: Breeding Gilts for Ak-Sar-Ben must be recorded on a form and returned to the Extension office by June 13. The cost is be $6 per head except $5 Feeder Calves. Buffalo County sheep exhibitors will need to nominate Ak-Sar-Ben sheep either during the County’s tagging/shearing day, or other designated time when sheep can be scheduled to bring to Extension office to be processed. Buffalo County hog exhibitors, on the other hand, may either transport their pigs to the Extension office to be DNA identified or families may pick up materials from the Extension office to collect their pigs DNA hair sample at home. In either case it will be expected of families to call the Extension office in advance to schedule a date and time for either sheep or hogs to be processed at the Extension office. June 13 is the absolute deadline to DNA animals for State Fair and Ak-Sar-Ben. A $10 late fee will be charged on ID’s accepted between June 2 and June 13.

2008 Nebraska State Fair Book - The 2008 Nebraska State Fair Book is available on the State 4-H Web page at: http://4h.unl.edu/programs/statefair/fairbook.htm There are a number of changes being made to the Nebraska State Fair Book and these changes will be reflected in the 2008 Buffalo County Fair Book. If you have questions about any of the changes or additions, please call the Extension office.

Quality Assurance Training Offered - June 18 at 6:30 p.m. A county-wide Quality Assurance Training is scheduled at the Buffalo County Extension office on Wednesday, June 18. This training is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Please call ahead to the office to reserve your spot in the trainings. The phone number for the Extension office is 308-236-1235. Foothill Drovers will have a training on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. on June 15. If you are planning on attending this club training, please call the Extension office. If you would prefer to take a test, there are tests available for those who are 12-14 and a different set of tests for those who are 15-18. 4-H’ers 8-11 are required to take the training. To take the test, please call ahead to schedule a time with Rose Mary at the Extension office, 308-236-1235, and tell her which test you want to take.

2008 National 4-H Invitational Shooting Sports Match - The 2008 National 4-H Invitational Shooting Sports Match will be in Nebraska at the Heartland Public Shooting Park and Events center in Grand Island on June 23-26. This event will involve 4-H youth from across the nation competing in Archery, Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, Mussleloading, and Hunting Skills. The 2008 National Invitational also takes place over a 6-day period, June 22-27. The days will include setup, practice, shooting and tear down. Help will be required on all days in many different ways. Call the Extension office for details.
